From the entirety of Karam’s rich visual language elements, the Elephant- renowned for its strong memory and its sense of solidarity and community- has a prevailing presence in the artist’s work. Symbolically, it can be seen as a guardian and purveyor of memories, without which we are anchorless.

In this 3-meter-high polished stainless steel sculpture with over 500 stainless steel tubes joining the two sides of the elephant, all his vocabulary of forms converge to be part of the internal world of the largest mammal on Earth. The perforations grow from the elephant’s eye, accumulated stories and experiences that evoke lifetimes of memories to observers that are drawn into the work when they approach, seeing their own reflections within the elephant’s stories. The sculpture’s mirror-like material gives an impression of lightness and familiarity, capturing the surroundings of the viewers.
