Absence
After the explosion at the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020, the streets of Beirut were filled with broken glass. With every step, the sound of crunching glass filled our beings with a heavy absence.
It could have been us, but it was them. I might be obsessed by the fact that I am alive - present while they are absent, and it makes me appreciate even more the extra time life offers me.
The Absence series is made of a combination of asphalt and broken mirrors. The outline drawings are not figures, but traces of absence. They are not dancing, jumping, laughing, acting, or manifesting in any way; they are absent.
Lives disappear in a glimpse at every moment. Their absence is final, eternal. They have ceased to exist, just like the dangerously growing numbers of extinct beings and species. Absence is mystical and hard to comprehend; it is much larger than us and continuously challenges our beings. Absence is a memory cloud of all vanishing and disappearing things.
