FIZZY
Plaza of Expo Place, Shanghai, China
Polished and Brushed Stainless Steel
Fizzy has been created for the plaza of Expo Place, a multifunctional complex blending retail, business and culture, while also pays homage to Shanghai Expo 2010 and its theme, "Better City, Better Life".
The installation is a celebration of sensorial abundance- a tapestry of stories and possibilities encapsulated in ascending bubbles that resonate with the vibrant spirit of Shanghai. Each bubble captures the city’s dynamic essence, reflecting its pulse, diversity, and boundless energy with the whimsical elements it contains, 8 of which are rotating, creating a dynamic movement to the sculpture.
Fizzy reimagines the city's rapid modernization alongside its deep cultural roots, translating them into floating stories and dreams for passersby to experience. The bubbles represent fleeting yet permanent moments in time- stories untold, overlooked moments and dreams yet to be imagined- an effervescence of urban reveries.
Rooted in Karam’s distinctive yet universal visual language, Fizzy incorporates the renowned Archaic Procession elements, timeless archetypes that evoke collective narratives while remaining deeply tied to Shanghai’s cultural identity. These playful, familiar yet wondrous forms weave a narrative that bridges the city's past, present, and future while celebrating interconnectedness with people and nature.
Fizzy extends the legacy of Shanghai Expo 2010, aligning with Karam’s belief that cities should not only function but also inspire, uplift, and connect through imagination. His public art transforms urban spaces into dreamscapes, responding to contemporary challenges, social realities, and questions of identity—shaping cities as places of wonder and storytelling.
