Shepherd and Thinker are part of Karam’s 2015 Stretching Thoughts series, within which he explores the origin, potential, construction, and materiality of thought through the use of scrap steel. The two works are androgynous human figures with heads of scrap steel, symbolising the unlimited potential of creative thought. On the campus of Atlantic College, where students are encouraged to challenge perceived limitations in all aspects of thought, Karam placed his seated Thinker near the student residences, and the Shepherd, a rallying point for resident sheep, stands near the cliffs facing the ocean horizon.
