WISHING FLOWER
ZAHA HADID’S D’LEEDON RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX, SINGAPORE
Brushed Stainless Steel
Wishing Flower was commissioned to integrate the landscape of Zaha Hadid’s D’Leedon familial residential complex in Singapore. Taking inspiration from the petal-shaped plan of Hadid’s architecture, Karam created a work based on the wishing flower of childhood games. The sculpture is situated within a large central water feature, anchored to a base sitting just below the water surface so that the work appears to be standing on water. The large, flower-shaped head and chubby, childlike legs give it a jaunty, slightly mischievous appearance. Traces of Karam’s signature shapes incorporated within the flower petals hint at fragments stories to be told or imagined. The brushed stainless steel finish of the work captures light reflections off the water that shift and change with the sun and shadows, giving the work an animated presence.
